Integrative Equine Bodywork

The Masterson Method® is integrative bodywork. It is not traditional “massage.”

Integrative bodywork is whole-horse bodywork: addressing the physical, mental and emotional, all of which affect comfort and performance. I am working “with” the horse, not “on” the horse. It is non-invasive and interactive.

I recognize and use responses to touch to find and then release accumulated tension in key junctions of the horse’s body that most affect performance. This light touch, along with gentle movement in a relaxed state, allows the horse to release accumulated discomfort and tension in 3 key junctions of the body that most affect performance: the Poll/Atlas, the Neck/Shoulders/Withers (Cervical-Thoracic Junction) and the Hind End (Sacroiliac Junction).

Masterson Method® bodywork bypasses the sympathetic (fight/flight/freeze) responses, allowing the horse’s parasympathetic nervous system (restore/regenerate/relax) to release the deep core and postural muscle and connective tissue tension. Releasing tension in the deep core and postural muscles and connective tissue improves range of motion, suppleness and strength. I pledge to meet every horse “where they are” and work with them, not on them. Releasing tension in the key junctions of the body that most affect performance not only helps the horse physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Tension arises with repetitive work, pain/discomfort, previous injury compensations, as well as stress. This tension and restricted movement can affect performance, comfort, flexibility, range of motion and demeanor/behavior.

Masterson Method® techniques target ALL of the following: the autonomic nervous system, muscles, joints, fascia and elements of energy. The result is improved range of motion in major joints which affects length/evenness of stride and lateral reach. It also improves the suppleness and strength needed for impulsion, collection, bend and lift through the thoracic sling. The icing on the cake is increased trust and connection with the horse!

Bodywork session notes showing the horse’s reactivity, restriction and tension across the body will be sent to the owner following each session. On occasion, depending on what I have found, targeted red/near infrared light therapy may be used/be beneficial at the end of the bodywork session.

I am happy to travel up to an hour from the Seacoast of New Hampshire. For longer distances, please inquire. If I can get a small group together in your area, I am happy to travel. If coming for just one horse, please reach out for travel rate to your location.

As an equine bodyworker, I am very happy to consult respectfully (if needed) with your hoof care provider. There is a direct connection between your horse’s feet and his body (musculoskeletal movement, gait integrity, posture). Bodywork will support changes being made to the feet.

Benefits of Equine Bodywork:

  • Improvement/Increase in Flexibility and Range of Motion

  • Relief of Pain/Discomfort due to Stiffness, Tension and Muscle Tightness

  • Increased Circulation

  • Improvement in Stamina/Strength/Endurance

  • Increased Performance (Posture, Gait Quality and Movement)

  • Increased Suppleness and Mobility

  • Improved Disposition/Attitude due to Greater Comfort and Endorphin Release

  • Relief/Reduction in Tension (tension can manifest as anxiety, spookiness, reactivity)

  • Develop and Reinforce Trust, Communication and Understanding between Horse and Human

Equine Bodywork is not a substitute for veterinary care. Any health concerns with your horse should be referred to an equine veterinarian.

“I really like how the sessions affect my horse, compared to before and after! She actually felt incredible – really worked quickly out of the neck stiffness, and we got some really nice work in!”
